SEL Series: Empathy

$9.99Price

Social emotional learning is super important, especially empathy, given the current climate of student behaviors in school post-pandemic. Explicitly learning about empathy is something that ALL of our students could benefit from. Learning about empathy is sure to help your students with their behavior and will help them be more respectful to both you and their peers.

This slideshow contains a series of activities and discussions that will guide you in creating a more empathetic class. These activities do not need to be done in order, but the skills do build on each other so it is recommended. See below for further details about each activity.

WHAT YOU GET

- 74 Slides that cover the following topics

Introduction to Empathy Video and Discussion: This is the perfect place to start in your instruction about empathy. Have the kids watch the video and jot down new learnings and discussion questions in the attached slide. Then, have a discussion about what it feels like to experience and not experience empathy.

Creation Activity: This activity gets students thinking about the emotions that empathy and lack of empathy can create in someone. It is the perfect lead in activity to talking about vulnerabilities.

My Vulnerabilities: This activity gets students thinking about what happens to people who don’t experience empathy. Students will identify their soft points and will get to learn about soft points that people may have. Finally, they will talk about what they can do with this information to be more empathetic.

Empathy in Action Game: If you’re looking for a fun way to dive into empathy, this is it! In this game, your students will practice using empathy and reading body language to tell how a person is feeling.

Breaking Points: This is a discussion and personal activity that involves thinking critically about your breaking points, or rather, where you have patience and tolerance and where you don’t. This activity leads the way to understanding why teachers may lose patience in certain situations.

Stand Up, Sit Down Game: This is a crowd-pleasing game. When playing this game, it is easy to see who has things in common with you. Follow the list of agree/disagree statements to guide you in playing!

My Autobiography: This activity is something I recommend doing at the end of this unit, as it is the most personal activity in this series. This activity asks your students to write their autobiography, with the culminating activity being a gallery walk where their autobiographies are anonymously hung. This lets students see all that their peers and dealing with and will strengthen their empathy toward one another.
